TVR Griffith 500 - “Black Magic”

From time to time, a Classic TVR comes into our possession… after we have judged it to be a very special car notwithstanding its time in use.

“Black Magic” is just such a car. Let’s look at the cosmetic situation first. P427 NOX is finished in gleaming high gloss Black. This contrasts beautifully with the red rear lamp clusters and the polished stainless - steel exhausts. This theme continues inside the car - as you will see shortly!

The roof is in black Mohair in very good condition. It is equipped with a very good Vybak rear window.

The car rides on standard TVR Factory alloys - fitted with the preferred specification Toyo tyres.

But it is the interior that impresses most!! This is in very good condition and majors on a striking combination of black and red trim - complemented by red carpeted door centres and red carpeting bound in black leather. And the dashboard? Burr Walnut? No! This dash is finished in a rare chequer-board, machined steel finish. It houses black - faced Instruments with white figures all equipped with Leven - style instrument surrounds. There are also aluminium vent surrounds, control knobs, switches and steering column stalks. The whole effect is very professional and can justifiably be termed a “Top Gun” cockpit environment.

How about the parts of the car that are less easy to see - specifically the chassis and suspension? We can assure you, there is absolutely no cause for concern! Here is the report issued to the last owner on 16 Feb 22 by Str8six. You will see that Str8six does not simply swop out black boxes: “Carry out inspection and report. Strip out rear suspension, diff, driveshafts etc. Soak chassis in petrol and steam clean to remove Waxoyl. Remove all loose and flaking paint, prepare bare areas of chassis with Jenolite rust inhibitor.

Paint chassis with 2 coats of smooth Hammerite paint. Send rear upper and lower wishbones, rear uprights, exhaust mounting plate, driveshafts, Anti roll bar and diff mounts for shot-blasting and powder-coating.

Strip diff of loose corrosion, remove backplate & reseal, replace driveshaft seals. Paint diff casing in black Hammerite and rear housing in silver. Clean and prepare CV joints, refit using new grease and gaiters with passivated gaiter joints.

Replace N/S/F upper wishbone and bushes. Re-glue bezels onto both window switches. Cleaned O/S/R lamp unit bulb holders, replaced stop tail bulb. Carry out Optiline 4 wheel alignment and suspension bolt check"

The bill for all this work, plus a host of brand new parts, was £4,500 + VAT. I should mention this included an ACT Cherry Bomb exhaust system (considered by many to be THE best sounding TVR V8 exhaust!?).

Str8six’s work was in addition to a plethora of attention devoted to the car by the last owner himself (and also assigned to a specialist company) between Nov 2020 and Jun 2021. Copies of all these invoices are held in the car’s very comprehensive provenance file.

The story doesn’t end there. The previous owner ultimately decided to part exchange P427 NOX for a TVR Tuscan. Having bought his Griffith, we then decided to cage the last reported concern, which was the chassis outriggers.

These were cut off flush with the main chassis and a new pair were seam welded into position by our own expert welder. This is a job we would normally charge out at £3,000 + VAT.

If you are this car’s next owner, you can decide whether you would like the pristine chassis to be protected by a sprayed wax finish or left visible - as it currently is. This should depend on whether you intend to drive your Griff all year round (except on salted roads!) or just on sunny summer days.

You can probably see that “Black Magic” has had a great deal of specialist work, and money, invested and this TVR is genuinely a thoroughbred “Keeper”.

We have every confidence in this striking (in the best sense of the word) potential family heirloom - and do note that the car is already eligible for export to your dream retirement home in the US of A !! Food for thought?

“Black Magic” will of course be supplied with Str8six’s renowned “All the 12s” handover specification. Notwithstanding the history it will receive
another 12,000 service and 12 months MOT. The car will also benefit from Str8six’s own 12 months /12,000 miles FULL WEAR and TEAR WARRANTY - covering PARTS and LABOUR on the whole car. It will also be equipped with an Accumate 12 volt trickle charger. It will be taxed for 6 months.
